The Story

How it all started:

The Danish girls made the impossible possible (or did they?…) It is a good story anyway. Below you have the story about the Hobiegirls:

Is it really possible that two Danish girls coming from a little summer beach town called Hornbæk, can “beat” the whole Danish Hobie Cat 16 elite? Yes, apparently the two girls, skipper Michala and crew Yoanna just wanted to have some fun on the sea. They signed up in June 2013 for the Hobie Cat 16 race in Copenhagen “Tour the Øresund” in a 26 years old beach Hobie Cat with at bent mast and some very old sails. Last time the girls had sailed properly together was 20 years ago and they had never sailed in a Hobie Cat race before! Not only that, but they were the ‘only’ girls boat, which made it even more fun…. The Danish girls made the impossible possible by winning the first two races! Everybody was thrilled (and secretly stunned) and the girls were ready for more. Well it is a funny story and yes Yoanna and Michala did winn the two first races, and the adventure did not stop there, they have sailed in many places all around the world since then and they have had a lot of fun. That is what Hobie racing is about – HAVING FUN!

The Hobiegirls have participated in many Hobie races abroad among others:

  • 2013 the HobieGirls participated in the Hobie Cat 2013 European Championships in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy.
  • February 2014 they went to Australia to the 2014 Hobie World Championship.
  • July 2014 the HobieGirls went to Barcelona to sail in the 2014 European Championship.
  • 2015 the HobieGirls sailed in the Hobie Europeans in Campione Lake Garda, Italy.
  • 2016 Yoanna sailed in the Hobie Cat 4 Nations Cup.
  • 2017 Michala sailed in the Philippine Hobie Challenge 2017. They hit a storm and lost 10 Hobie Cat’s and all their luggage. Hobie sailing is not boring…
  • 2018 Hobie 2018 Europeans Denmark arranged by the Hobiegirls and Hornbæk Boat Club www.hobie2018european.com
  • 2020 Hobie Fiji Challenge……

Both Michala and Yoanna race for fun, they love sailing and yes it would be great to win, but sailing in international Hobie events is challenging and demanding – the girls are so grateful that the Hobie people are like surfer; they are cool, helpful, funny, extremely friendly and great sailors. So thank you to all of you wonderful Hobie sailors all around the world, thank for letting us join your Hobie events, thank you for your patience and all your help – we have learned so much in so little time and we are still learning.

The HobieGirls have managed to get the HOBIE MULTI EUROPEANS 2018 to Denmark to their little summer town where the adventure started so many years ago. The logo for the Hobie event has been designed by the HobieGirls and the webpage: www.hobie2018european.com has also been designed and build by Michala & Yoanna, it is their way of saying thank you to Hobie 🙂
